counties to your neighborhood. now it's complete coverage, it's wjz, maryland's news station. >> step towards normalcy. schools reopen in new town after friday's massacre while two more small children are laid to rest. >> hi, i'm kia jackson. fearful students return to schools in newtown, connecticut. randall reports for wjz. one elementary school was force to close because of threats. the coffin carrying the body of james left the church as family and friends hugged each other. his family described him as a numbers guy who loved math and recess. soon after the little boy's funeral, the scene was repeated. mourners gathered at the same church to say good-bye to

jessica rekos. who loved horses and whales. one for teacher victoria soto who has been called a hero for shielding students from the gunman. >> the memorials for the 20 students and 6 teachers grow each other. well wishers are coming to pay their respects. some lit candles. other put ornaments on christmas trees. many wonder how the families will get through the holidays. >> that's where my heart goes out to. i can't imagine having to wake up christmas morning. i wouldn't want to. >> newtown is slowly trying to return to normal. other schools reopened for the first time. the buses had green and white ribbons on the front. sandy hook's colors. police kept one school closed after they received threats. >> i'll always be worried but now it's very bad. >> children at sandy hook have not returned to school.

they will be at a school at the nearby town of monroe. >> one high school student says the mood was somber and there will be no christmas joy at his school this year. we have breaking news from tulsa, oklahoma where there are shots fired near a school. this is helicopter video just into wjz. you can see police in that area surrounding celia clinton elementary school. they are searching for a possible suspect. the school is currently on lock down. we'll bring you more information as it becomes available. people on both sides of the gun control issue are admitting in the wake of the new town tragedy. time for new attitudes about america's gun laws.

denise is in the news room. >> several die hard pro gun senators are shifting their positions saying they can no longer bring them to gun safety policies. family members of victims are in washington and call on congress to implement change. calling for tighter gun control laws. >> we're here because we know america is greater than those awful moments. we're here because we envision in america that's known as the nation that solves this terrible gun violence epidemic once and for all. we can do this. we can do this. >> west virginia democrat was one of the first senators to say it is time for a new debate about gun control. he spoke with president obama and called for all sides to come to the table. >> the brady campaign emphasizes

all conversations must be respectful of the second amendment. after weeks of deadlock, there are signs of the government close to a fiscal cliff deal. daniel reports on president obama's latest counter offer to prevent year end tax hikes for middle class americans. >> house speaker john boehner met with republicans this morning to discuss fiscal cliff proposal. also began work on a so-called plan b to prevent a tax increase in case he does not reach a deal with the white house before january 1st. >> our plan b would protect american taxpayers who make a million dollars or less. >> the white house quickly rejected the back up proposal. >> the plan b that's been put out there achieves nothing. lose hundreds of billions of dollars of revenue. >> the president initially insisted on letting tax cuts expire for households making $250,000 or more.

the new counter proposal raises that to $400,000. and for the first time, the president is willing to accept some reduction in future cost of living benefit increases for social security recipients. >> in addition to negotiations with the president, john boehner has another challenge convincing gop conservatives to accept any increases in income taxes. >> many republicans believe tax increases will hurt small businesses. pedro owns a company that installs voice and data networks. he's willing to pay higher taxes if he gets something in return. >> there has to be a reform entitlement. there has to be a reduction in spending in terms of federal government spending. >> even though the fiscal cliff deadline is the end of the year, congress still needs time to vote on a deal to avoid taxes going up for all-americans and across the board spending cuts. in washington, daniel noddingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> a new poll shows only half

of all-americans believe a deal westbound made before the end of the year. a man shot last night in west baltimore has died and city police are searching for a suspect. an officer heard shots fired. they found a 32-year-old man suffering from a gun shot wound. it appears he was outside when he was approached by two unknown suspects. the man's family is being notified. a fast moving fire in baltimore county leaves a family of 6 without a home. a quick thinking neighbor may have saved lives. >> here's what it sounds like when firefighters must evacuate this burning home. that horn confirmed what bystanders feared. this fire was dangerous, big and getting worse. >> there was a call for a may day but that was a mistake. just in the rear of the building. nobody knew where he was. everything is okay. >> two kids 13 and 9 were home

alone watching tv. the neighbor was out walking his dogs. >> two kids come running out and said a fire. and i went around and tried to go back in and get the cat and i told them no. >> smoke turned to fire, ed may have saved their lives. not even five minutes. it was quick. almost like it exploded. >> the girlfriend who lives here tells a neighbor she believes the fire started in a clothes dryer. >> the house is gutted. children's toys laid ruined . this is a tough time to lose what you have. denise is dropping off what she can. >> just so much has been happening and i just felt the need to do it. >> unable to return, the family of 6 is living with relatives around the corner. they are collecting donations. >> you would do the same thing if you were walking by. >> wjz, eyewitness news. >> a nearby neighbor started a

facebook page to collect donations to help the family. we have a link to that page. go to wjz.com and you can learn more. baltimore county police are warning shoppers about a thief stealing iphones. sunday afternoon two people were robbed while shopping. a woman sitting on a bench had her iphone taken out of her hands. another was stolen inside macy's. police are looking for two suspects in the crimes. >> the federal emergency management agency is adding carol and montgomery counties to the list. baltimore county as the only jurisdiction not included in the grant program. mountain regions suffered the most damage in the storm. partly reimburses state and local governments related to public works and services. after a wet morning, we finally got to see sun outside. the rain and fog are gone and

partly sunny out there. look at that beautiful day. wjz has weather and traffic. meteorologist bernadette woods is here. i think most of us will take this over the fog yesterday. >> this is just beautiful. that sun just burst out today and really helped to warm things up. we're going to show you there were a couple lingering showers but those are now moving away. there's the bulk of the storm off to the north. as far as temperatures go with the gusty wind and northwesterly wind, we haven't cooled down all that much. in fact, we are still sitting at 51 in baltimore. 55 in dc. we already had our highs a couple hours ago close to 60. we're starting to drop somewhat. still a mild day for us tomorrow and big changes coming this weekend. we'll have that forecast coming up. >> let's check on our roads. >> hi, everyone. we are starting off with a lot of accidents. definitely going to

be a struggle on 70 eastbound. a crash at the beltway blocking the two right-hand lanes. northbound 895 blocking the left-hand lane and southbound on the express way at northern parkway. other accidents include south brew street and falls road. as far as delays go quite a few around the beltway. the first one on the top side green spring avenue over to hart ford road. from the 95 over to 70. as far as 95 itself goes, slow on the southwest side there from the 32 past 100. a live look. things are a bit slow there. and we'll take another live look. that is due to the accident there 70 eastbound at the beltway. it's really backing things up. this traffic report is brought to you locally by papa johns. enter papa rewards for your chance to win a free pizza. back to you. >> thank you, kristy.

it's 51 degrees and partly sunny. the forecast is coming up. an oregon man is crushed to death by a dump truck. portland police say he was sleeping in a dumpster when the truck started compacting trash. workers heard the man screaming and called for help. freed his foot and rushed him to the hospital. so far, no word on his condition. convicted polygmist warren jeff owe.

and noticed sunshining to the area on the gust northwesterly winds bringing in dryer air. these are sustained winds. wind gusts even higher than that exceeding 30 miles per hour. it's been a windy day. even with that wind it is still mild. still 51 degrees in baltimore. 55 in dc. it was in the 60s this afternoon at baltimore, washington airport high of 59. the average is 44. way above that average and even in the forecast for the next couple days, we have above average days. then that changes over the weekend. we wrap up this storm. it gets out of here. a little bit of a break. this is the next storm getting its act together that's going to change for us. it's going to have a snowstorm and have a blizzard

and it's also going to have severe weather. for us it's in the form of rain. and that comes our way as we head thursday through the day. the rain out there, then that gets out of here friday. the winds really start to pick up. gusty winds friday and saturday. very high winds. probably over 40 miles per hour. bringing in that colder air. snow showers continuing into the weekend. even in our area, part of that storm system, winter storm watch thursday. we're not talking about that yet but in the future. as far as the waters, warning still in affect until tonight. then the winds die down tomorrow. may see small craft advisories go back into affect. 34 degrees. the winds died down and tomorrow up to 53. another mild day out there. breezy at times in the afternoon and still above average at 53

the ar 15. >> more than 3 million americans own an ar 15. >> it's a fun gun to shoot. >> gun store owners say buyers like it because it's the civilian version of the m 16 used by the u.s. military. and it's futuristic appearance has it playing a role in american pop culture. >> you better tell me right now. >> it's the gun of choice in movies and video games. you see it and you want it. the same reason why somebody stands online for 25 hours to buy an apple iphone. >> it's a weapon used in some of the worst mass shootings in recent history. ar 15 that was used last friday that killed 26 people at sandy hook elementary school in newtown, connecticut. last week a man used one to kill two people in portland, oregon. and in july an ar 15 was used in the movie theater master in

aurora, colorado. through it all, the gun's popularity has continued to soar. gun store owner rick friedman says since last friday's shooting, ar 15s have been flying off the shelves. >> i sell about 15 or 20 a month. i've sold 30 in the last three days. people want to make sure they can own them legally before they have that right taken away. >> and it's not just men. many women like the ar 15 too including former presidential candidate michele bachmann who uses hers for hunting and target practice. >> my favorite gun is ar 15 cause you can be so accurate with it. >> planning an effort to ban military style rifles. there is already talk for a push to ban assault weapons. >> nbc chief foreign corespondent are freed in syria

after being held captive for days. >> the crew was freed. arrived in turkey earlier today. they were seized by a group of heavily armed men shortly after crossing into northwest syria. they were bound and blindfolded but not harmed by their unknown captors. engel says he think the kidnappers were a shiite group. >> no claim of responsibility and no requests for ran some while the crew was missing. >> no new information is being released to the public. the oil company spent last week trying to figure out the source in the gulf of mexico. 7 million gallons of the oil leaked in the gulf after the deep water horizon disaster. bp pleaded guilty about lying to congress about how much oil was pouring

into the water. the u.s. government fines toyota for delayed safety reports. $17.4 million fine to the national highway traffic safety administration. the ntsb says toyota failed to report a safety defect. this is the 4th fine levied against toyota in the past two years. >> a strong storm slams into washington state. as jeff reports, the severe weather caused problems on the roads and on the water. >> the only thing i remember is breaking glass. >> steve was driving to work around 5:30 this morning in lake stevens in the pouring rain and darkness he could barely see the tree come crashing down. >> headlights and looked like fuzzy stuff which ended up being a tree. just happened so quick, there wasn't even much more to hit brakes. >> landed across 84th street in

lake stevens. the impact crushed the front of his pick up. >> were you able to get out? >> i kicked the door open and got out. >> the deputy thought for sure it was going to be a fatal crash but shocked to see him walking around. his only injury, a cut hand. >> if it happeneds a second later or earlier, i wouldn't be here. >> another foot he wouldn't have made it. >> around the same time, two people on board this goat were being rescued. high winds tossed their bay liner around. flooded the yacht. the two people sleeping on board were alerted by someone on the dock and got out. it was one of two boats on the same pier that went down this morning. >> parked it the same way in the same place. >> chris's friend was on the boat and tied it up after watching the christmas ships. the boat thrashed against a dock. >> it's a boat. could be worse. i have

in california, a robber goes to great lengths to break into a video game store. he drove his car through the window before grabbing iphones and ipads and left his vehicle and took off on foot. store owners are left with missing merchandise and big repairs. last check police had not found the suspect. >> the cowboy's player charged with manslaughter makes a court appearance. >> been ordered to wear an electronic monitor to track his blood alcohol level and bond was lowered from 500 to $100,000.

charged within toxin indicated manslaughter for the accident that killed his friend and teammate jerry brown. police say brent was sleeping when his car hit a curb and flipped over. the cowboys have barred him from standing on the sidelines for the rest of the year. in court today, he appeared in jeans and a white t-shirt. >> thank you. on the nfl reserve nonfootball illness list. >> volunteers from the midwest hope caring pets will help ease the pain of children after friday's shooting. >> reporter: nine golden retrievers. an emotional rescue. to help comfort the children who survived the attack at sandy hook and other children. sponsored and trained by lutheran church charities transported in the ban.

>> the u.s. postal service has dedicated a post office box to newtown so people can send condolences. >> a family affair three siblings charged in a crime spree return to the courtroom. charged with bank robbery in several states. greg has the story. >> the siblings looked much different today walking out of a court house than when they robbed a bank in august 2011. bound in handcuffs monday after learning their fate they were found guilty on all charges related to the bank robbery part of a crime spree that started in florida and ended with a shoot out in colorado. ryan, lee grace and dillon were each sentenced to 35 years in jail all pleaded guilty to the bank robbery and firearms charges. >> i think a great justice was

done today and a message was sent out to society and to the nation that our society is not going to tolerate this. >> in court, ryan protested the judge's decision but senior judge wasn't having it. he said it was a miracle no one was killed. all three have received jail sentences for the crimes committed in colorado. and the jail time will be served simultaneously. they still have at least one more court appearance to face charges for a shooting at a deputy in florida during a high speed chase. >> once the siblings are out of prison, five years of supervised release. doctors in britain get quite a shock while treating a boy with a runny nose. x rays the child and found something unexpected. it's a tooth. researchers believe the child put the tooth under his pillow
